Dressage Horse & Rider
Dressage is a French term meaning "training." Its purpose is the development of the horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to work. Dressage produces a horse who is calm, supple and attentive to his rider. Dressage develops and improves the balance, strength, flexibility and accuracy of both the horse and rider and improves the horse's ability to use its body. The communication between the horse and rider becomes so subtle that the horse seems to be performing without any input from the rider. As horse and rider become more proficient in Dressage, they begin to perform the more spectacular movements such as the collected and extended gaits, balanced lateral movements (where the horse travels sideways and diagonally) and collected work such as the pirouettes, passages and the piaffe (where the horse trots in place).
